How we count
- Source: each practice's own status on the NHS website's Find a dentist service, read for all of England every hour.
- Practices: every practice the NHS website lists for routine NHS care (5,847 now). Practices that only take specialist referrals are left out. Practices not listed on the NHS website aren't counted.
- Adults = taking new NHS patients aged 18 or over. 75 other practices take only adults entitled to free NHS dental care; they're on the area pages. Children = aged 17 or under.
- Areas: a practice counts in the constituency, council area, region and ICB of its postcode (Postcodes.io, ONS data, Open Government Licence). 23 practices aren't matched to an area yet.
- Caveat: practices update the NHS website themselves, and the "last confirmed" dates we see are often weeks old. A practice can say it's taking patients and still have a waiting list. Always phone first.
- Checked: on 30 Oct 2026 we compared 11 practices' pages and 2 full search results pages on the NHS website with our data: 92 of 92 statuses matched.
Get the numbers as a spreadsheet: nhs-dentist-access.csv (every constituency, council area, region and ICB). Questions or a fresh cut of the numbers: hello@dentistradar.app.
Questions
- How many NHS dentists are taking new patients in England?
- On 31 Oct 2026, 1,781 of the 5,847 NHS dental practices listed on the NHS website (30%) said they were taking new adult NHS patients, and 2,540 (43%) were taking children. 75 more take only adults entitled to free NHS dental care.
- Which areas have the fewest NHS dentists taking new adult patients?
- In 67 of the 527 constituencies we rank, not one listed practice says it takes new adult NHS patients. The table above lists the 40 with the lowest share, worst first.
- How often are these numbers updated?
- We read every practice's status on the NHS website's Find a dentist service once an hour, and this page recalculates every 15 minutes.
- Where do the numbers come from?
- From what each practice tells the NHS website. Practices update it themselves, so a status can be weeks old: always phone the practice to check.
- Can I use these numbers?
- Yes, free. Please credit "Dentist Radar, from NHS website data" and link to https://dentistradar.app/nhs-dentist-access. The information from the NHS website is under the Open Government Licence v3.0.
- Is Dentist Radar part of the NHS?
- No. It is an independent service and isn't endorsed by the NHS. Every status is free to see here and on the NHS website.
